Time Lapse Video for Environmental Monitoring, Humber River Mouth, Toronto

As part of an Ontario Ministry of the Environment study, Hunter and Associates installed a time lapse video system on the top of the Pallace Pier Condominium Tower on Toronto's western waterfront and overlooking the Humber River mouth and eastern beaches. Time lapse video imagery, during daylight hours, was used to monitor the intrusion of Humber River water behind the Humber Bay breakwater. The video image were interpreted for direction of wave approach, wave velocity and other environmental parameters. The results were used to assess the effectiveness of a diversion jetty that was presently under construction at preventing plume intrusion beyond the breakwater.

Time lapse video monitoring is useful for many other surveillance programs, including environmental model development and calibration for stack effluent plumes.
