Forestry Management Representative Assignments |
| Project | Location | Client | Description |
| Sunnidale Tree Survey | Barrie Ontario |
Davis Construction Company | Inventory of tree species, age, and condition using airphoto interpretation and ground studies. Preparation of expert witness testimony for Ontario Municipal Board Hearing. |
| Sheridan Nursery Survey | Southern Ontario | Sheridan Nursery Limited | Design of an aerial photographic survey and photo interpretation for 850 ha of nursery stock. |
| Biomass Inventory | Great Cat Arm Newfoundland | Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro | Above ground biomass inventory for a proposed 5,000 ha hydroelectric reservoir. Design of harvest and clearing strategies, and cost estimates for a 2 year clearing program. |
| Regeneration Survey | Central Newfoundland | Abitibi Price Inc. | Acquisition of large scale (1:500-1:1,000) simultaneous aerial stereo photography for regeneration stocking analysis. |
| Regeneration Survey | Central Newfoundland | Newfoundland Forest Resources and Lands | Acquisition of large scale aerial stereo photography and analysis of photos for regeneration stocking. |
| Regeneration Survey | Newfoundland | Canadian Forestry Service | Regeneration mensuration and analysis of stocking on large scale aerial stereo models through photo interpretation, analytical photogrammetry, and computer graphics. |
| Stocking Surveys | Newfoundland | Canadian Forestry Service | Development and testing of a methodology for use of large scale aerial photo sampling to determine regeneration stocking and site conditions. |
| Regeneration Surveys | Sioux Lookout Ontario | Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources | Species working group stocking estimates for 3,500 ha forest cutover. Assessment used 1:4,000/1:8,000 colour infrared aerial photography taken during the spring leaf free period. |
| Forest Land Capability | East Central Labrador | Newfoundland Forest Resources and Lands | Forest Land Capability Assessment at a scale of 1:125,000 for 40,000 km2 area of east central Labrador. Conifer and broadleaf forest assessment involved the application of Canada Land Inventory Methods within an Ecological Land Classification database and mapping units. |
| Fee-to-grow Assessment | Cochrane Ontario | Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources | Free-to-grow assessment for natural and planted conifer regeneration using large scale photo sampling and analytical photogrammetry. Photography was obtained under leaf-free conditions. Competition on the conifer working group species was assessed. |
| Regeneration Survey | Central New Brunswick |
New Brunswick Depart. of Natural Resources | Large scale photo sampling and photogrammetry to assess stocking and condition of natural regeneration areas and plantations. |
| Five-Year Assessment | Northern New Brunswick |
Fraser Inc. | Large scale photo sampling of 7,000 ha of forest cover for the assessment of stocking, competition and seeding heights. |
| Forest Fuel Survey | Northern Ontario | Great Lakes Forest Research Centre | Collection of mensurational and environmental data along with duff samples from 300 stands across Northern Ontario. Sampling was stratified to cover a cross-section of natural stands from a wildfire perspective. Forest fuel cover types were identified and a database and report were prepared. |
| Regeneration Spacing Study | Northern Ontario | Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources | Acquisition and analysis of 2,000 stereo model (1:600 scale) colour positives for 200 young stands, including both natural regeneration and plantations of spruce and pine. Photo plots measured using a Zeiss G-2 Stereocord and in-house software on an HP 9816 microcomputer for species, height and location within plot. Data were analyzed on an AT microcomputer. Derived data looked at spacing relationships between stems. |
| Foliar Collection | Cochrane Ontario |
Great Lakes Forest Research Centre | Collection of black spruce foliage and site information to monitor nutrient changes following site drainage. |
| Detailed Soil Survey | Chapleau Ontario |
Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources | A soil survey for 10,000 ha and a report, soil map and database were developed for the Chapleau District to be used for Prime Land Intensive Forest Management. Field work involved airphoto interpretation, detailed soil profile description and ground reverification. |
| Forest Inventory | Chapleau Ontario |
Chapleau Forest Products | A forest resource inventory program using standard photo interpretation (1:15,840) and mapping procedures. Strategic large scale photo plot sampling (LSP) over the area was used to estimate volume by stand and species. Linear regressions for height/volume were developed from ground sampling data on various site types. Regressions were used in estimating stand volume of these various site types using LSP measurement data. |
| Regeneration/ Stocking Survey |
Northern Ontario | Domtar Forest Products | 40,000 ha of regenerating cutover were surveyed using 1,500 LSP (1 plot/25 ha) survey approach. The cutover area was first stratified by site condition then a proportional to size sampling design for each strata developed. Results were used to evaluate the stocking and regeneration conditions of the cutovers. |
| Preliminary Free-to-Grow Assessment | Northern Ontario | Kimberly Clarke Spruce Falls |
A preliminary Free-to-Grow (FTG) assessment was carried out using multidate LANDSAT imagery. A spring image was used to stratify the cutovers into various age and stocking classes. Summer imagery was used as an “overlay” indicating which of the potential FTG areas has server competition. |
| GIS in Operational Forest Management | Northern Ontario | Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources | Use of micro based geographic information systems to integrate and manipulate forestry databases and map files to produce new perspectives and "derived" maps quickly and easily. |
| Evaluation of Techniques for Updating Forestry GIS Databases | Northern Ontario | Ontario Centre for Remote Sensing | Techniques for updating forestry and GIS databases were evaluated. Microcomputer GIS and video technology were utilized to update raster and vector forestry databases via LANDSAT Thematic Mapper (TM) images and aerial photography. Analysis was carried out to determine comparison of areal accuracies obtained from using TM imagery and live video overlay of aerial photography to create an updated 1:20,000 scale cutover map. |
